Cat Missing in Yellowstone Makes Remarkable 800-Mile Journey Home in Two Months

Cat Missing in Yellowstone Reunited with Owners After 800-Mile Journey Home

A cat that went missing during a camping trip in Yellowstone National Park has been joyfully reunited with its owners after traveling over 800 miles back to California.

Benny and Susanne Anguiano lost their cat, Rayne Beau, while on holiday in June. After a five-day search that included leaving out his favorite toys and treats, they reluctantly returned home, believing he was lost for good.

Two months later, Rayne Beau was discovered at an animal shelter in Roseville, California, close to the couple's home in Salinas. In a Facebook post, Mr. Anguiano shared that Rayne Beau—pronounced “rainbow”—had lost 40% of his body weight and was in dire health, with blood sugar and protein levels near starvation.

The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals found him wandering in the street and contacted the Anguianos, leading to their emotional reunion.

Mrs. Anguiano recalled the pain of leaving him behind: “That was the hardest day because I felt like I was abandoning him.” As they drove away from the campsite, she spotted a double rainbow, which gave her hope that they would see Rayne Beau again.

“Out of nowhere, these double rainbows appeared, and it just knitted it all together for me,” she said, emphasizing the importance of microchipping pets: “Definitely microchip your cat or your pet and register the microchip online. We would have never gotten him back had that not happened.”

Though they were reunited with Rayne Beau in early August, the couple delayed sharing their story due to the trauma of the experience. It remains a mystery how Rayne Beau managed to travel the long distance across at least two states, including northern Nevada, where the summer climate can be harsh.
