Ghost of Tsushima Sequel Ghost of Yotei Announced at Sony's State of Play, Set for 2025 Release
Ghost of Tsushima is officially getting a sequel, titled Ghost of Yotei, confirmed during today’s Sony State of Play presentation. Slated for a 2025 release, the announcement was one of the event's biggest surprises, closing the showcase with a significant reveal of in-game footage, including stunning cinematics. This time, the story moves away from Jin Sakai, introducing a new protagonist, Atsu, and a fresh setting in the lands surrounding Mount Yōtei (modern-day Hokkaido).
Though details were scarce, a post from the PlayStation blog gave additional insight. The game will be set in 1603, 300 years after the original, in an era far removed from the organized samurai clans of Tsushima. Sucker Punch describes the new setting as "a far cry" from the world of Jin Sakai, offering a new story and a fresh approach to the "Ghost" legend.
According to Sucker Punch, Ghost of Yotei will maintain the core elements of Ghost of Tsushima: players will still step into the role of a wandering warrior in Feudal Japan, exploring a vast and beautiful world at their own pace. The game will also feature new mechanics, gameplay improvements, and weapons, building on the original formula while introducing fresh innovations.
As the first title from Sucker Punch built exclusively for the PlayStation 5, Ghost of Yotei promises to deliver even more impressive visuals and gameplay enhancements. Inspired by Akira Kurosawa and classic samurai films, Ghost of Tsushima set the standard with its engaging combat and breathtaking landscapes when it was released in 2020, receiving critical acclaim.
With a Ghost of Tsushima movie also in development, directed by John Wick’s Chad Stahelski, the franchise continues to expand into new territory. Fans can expect more updates in the months leading up to the release of Ghost of Yotei in 2025.
